A Brief Alteration of Color

by Sarah Horner

/ hunger                               / taste
                            / bruise
              / build
/ ease                            / rest

                                                             / dawn

The sun is round. The sun is round warm gentle light
At dawn. I look right at it. You wake up slowly
You wake up slowly                     You wake up slowly
                                   / bloom

Crack a window. Let the breeze meet                 Last night’s love-air
                                                           / decay

My skin is a lovely kaleidoscope. My skin is white, red, purple        Touched
How many colors in a rainbow?          In a rainbow there is
Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet, want
That’s eight, I count, one more than last time                     More than last time
In various places I ache                       Breasts, neck, mouth, stomach, throat. Chest—
Where lies rotting the truth of me and you
                                                                      / passing

What happens before we fully decompose?       There is a brief alteration of color
A moment of softness. Skin soft enough to puncture
I reach in. Engulf my needing fingertips in
Your sweet interior.
